What are laboratory results?

A laboratory value should not be interpreted by itself. The appropriate interpretation depends on the test, the laboratory's reference information, the person's circumstances and the reason the test was ordered.
How to organize lab results
Keep the test date, test name, result, units and laboratory reference range together whenever they are available. Preserve the original report when possible rather than recording only a single number.
Organizing results chronologically makes it easier to compare tests over time. It can also help prevent confusion when similar tests are performed at different laboratories or on different dates.
Reference ranges and context
Reference ranges are used by laboratories to help interpret results, but they are not universal diagnostic boundaries. Different laboratories may use different methods and reference intervals. A result outside a reference range does not automatically mean a person has a disease, and a result within a range does not guarantee that everything is normal.
Discuss unfamiliar or unexpected results with the healthcare professional who ordered the test or another appropriately qualified professional.
When to follow up
Follow the instructions provided with the laboratory report or by the healthcare professional. If a result is marked as urgent or the person is experiencing severe or worsening symptoms, appropriate medical attention should not be delayed while trying to interpret the report independently.

Keep the full laboratory report when possible, including the test name, units and reference information. Avoid comparing numbers from different tests as though they were identical when the tests, methods or laboratories differ.
Record changes over time
If a report is unclear, ask the healthcare professional who ordered the test to explain what the result means in the person's specific context.
